#IAmHorticulture
Meet the People Behind Every Bite, Bloom, and Breath #IAmHorticulture: Real People, Real Impact, Real Careers
Ask most students what a career in horticulture looks like, and you'll likely get a shrug or a guess about mowing lawns. What they won't picture is a floral designer building arrangements that carry a family through grief and celebration. Or a plant scientist decoding drought resistance to help feed a warming world. Or a public garden curator shaping the green space where a whole community comes to breathe.
That's exactly the gap #IAmHorticulture was built to close.
A Campaign Built to Put Faces on an Industry
Seed Your Future launched #IAmHorticulture to do something simple but overdue: let the people already living this career tell students what it actually looks like. Not a job description. Not a stock photo of someone in gardening gloves. Real professionals, in their own words, explaining how they got here and why they stayed.
The stories span the full range of paths into horticulture – because there isn't just one:
·
Art — the floral designers and landscape architects who treat plants as their medium
· Conservation — the professionals working to protect ecosystems and biodiversity
· Love of plants — the simplest and most enduring reason anyone enters the field
· Science and research — the plant breeders, pathologists, and researchers solving problems that affect food security and public health
· Public gardens — the curators and educators who turn shared green spaces into places of learning and connection
Since launching, the campaign has grown from a handful of early participants to dozens of professionals sharing their stories, with a goal of reaching 100 voices – a critical mass large enough that any student, from any background, can find someone in the campaign who looks like them or thinks like them.
Hear It From Them
Three of the campaign's participants share why they chose to be part of it:
"What I enjoyed most was being part of something bigger than just our own business. It was a chance to tell my story, but also to help show the next generation that horticulture is a real career with a lot of different opportunities." – Sam Di Rito, Manager and 3rd Generation family member, Collier's Greenhouse & Garden Center
"It is important to highlight different areas within the horticulture industry so high school students can see how wide the range of career opportunities really is. As someone who didn't even know horticulture existed when I was pursuing higher education, I hope my participation helps plant a seed for students, showing them that horticulture is a fantastic career option." – Fatima Najar, Trial Program Coordinator, Iowa Arboretum
"Everyone has a different story and experience in horticulture, and this is a great way to share those stories and bring more attention to the people behind the industry. It was nice to be part of something that recognizes the people who work in the industry and highlights the many different career paths and opportunities within horticulture." – Tony Escamilla, Wholesale Yard Supervisor, Midwest Groundcovers
Why This Matters Right Now
Horticulture isn't a niche interest. It's the produce on your plate, the parks where kids play, the trees cleaning the air we breathe. Nearly everything that makes daily life livable – food, clean air, beautiful and functional shared spaces – traces back to someone who chose this field.
And yet the people doing that work are largely invisible to the students who could be the next generation of them. #IAmHorticulture exists to change that – to make the invisible visible, and to make sure young people understand that choosing horticulture means choosing science, art, sustainability, and impact, all at once.
What Students Are Seeing
Every story in the campaign follows the same thread: someone found their way into horticulture through a specific spark – a college class, a family garden, a fascination with how plants grow and built a career they didn't know existed when they were in high school.
That's the point. A student who loves biology might not know that plant pathology is a career. A student who loves design might not connect that instinct to landscape architecture or floral design. A student who cares about climate and food systems might not realize horticultural science is where a lot of that work happens. #IAmHorticulture draws those lines explicitly, story by story.

How You Can Be Part of It
The campaign grows one story at a time, and there's always room for more voices – especially from corners of the industry that are still underrepresented. If you work in horticulture and got into it for reasons a student would relate to, your story belongs here.
Follow the campaign, share a post, or reach out to participate – because the best recruiting tool this industry has isn't a brochure. It's you.
