American Floral Endowment
Champion Spotlight: How the American Floral Endowment Is Investing in the Next Generation of Horticulture Careers
If you're a student wondering whether a career in flowers and plants can actually pay the bills – or a parent wondering the same thing on their behalf – meet one of Seed Your Future's partners putting real dollars behind the answer: the American Floral Endowment (AFE).
Since 1961, AFE has funded scholarships, paid internships, research, and education for students headed into floriculture and horticulture careers. Here's why that matters for our community.
More Than 30 Scholarships – And You Don't Need an Ag Degree
Each year, AFE opens applications for over 30 scholarships, ranging from $500 all the way up to $10,000. Many are open to students who aren't even majoring in agriculture – what matters most is a demonstrated interest in the floral industry and, for some awards, a work history or internship in the field.
That flexibility is a big deal for students who fell in love with plants through a part-time nursery job, a school greenhouse, or a 4-H project rather than a formal degree track.
Paid Internships That Turn Into Scholarships
Through the Vic & Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program and Mosmiller Intern Scholarship Program, students train at a commercial greenhouse, nursery, or retail/wholesale operation for three, four, or six months and get paid while they do it. Complete the internship, and AFE adds a scholarship on top, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000 depending on the program and length of the internship.
For families weighing whether a horticulture career is financially viable, this is the kind of proof point that changes the conversation.
Investing in Research, Too
AFE's support doesn't stop at undergrad. This year, they announced a new research scholarship worth $30,000–$35,000 for PhD students in floriculture or controlled-environment research, funding semester-long international research experiences that most students couldn't otherwise afford. It's a reminder that horticulture careers run all the way from the greenhouse floor to the research lab.
Leading the Industry Toward a Greener Future: Sustainabloom
For students who care about sustainability as much as they care about plants, AFE has an answer: Sustainabloom. Launched in 2022 and expanded into a full resource hub in 2024, Sustainabloom is AFE's industry-wide initiative helping floral businesses of every size adopt more sustainable practices – through free guides, research-backed tools, webinars, and planning templates covering everything from environmental impact to social and economic sustainability.
It's a reminder that a career in floriculture isn't just about growing beautiful things – it's also about growing them responsibly. Sustainabloom has already earned industry recognition, including a 2026 Spotlight Award from Greenhouse Grower, and AFE is currently running a $2.5 million campaign to make the program self-sustaining for the long term.
For students weighing whether horticulture aligns with their values around climate and environmental stewardship, Sustainabloom is proof the industry is actively investing in that future and building the resources to get there.
A Community, Not Just a Check
Beyond the money, AFE runs a Young Professionals Council for those ages 18-35 already working in the industry and any students/faculty still in academia, with a focus on floriculture/horticulture – a built-in network of mentors and peers for students who are just getting started.
Why This Partnership Matters to Seed Your Future
At Seed Your Future, we're focused on showing students, teachers, and parents that horticulture is a real, viable, and rewarding career path. Partners like AFE back that message up with tangible support – scholarships, paid work experience, and research funding that remove real barriers to entry.
For students: Application deadlines for AFE scholarships fall on May 1st each year, and internships fall on October 1st, and research grant deadlines vary – bookmark their deadline page or print out their deadlines poster so you don't miss out.
For educators: Consider building AFE's scholarship and internship list into your classroom resources or career-day materials.
For parents: These are dollars and hands-on experience your student can access starting now – not someday.
