Growing Careers: How a Simple Webinar Series Became a Global Classroom for Plant Careers

Real people. Real paths. Real conversations about what it actually takes to build a career in horticulture.

When Seed Your Future launched the Growing Careers Webinar Series in 2024, the goal was straightforward. Three times a semester, we'd bring a horticulture professional in front of a screen and let them talk – not in the polished, resume-ready way career fairs often demand, but honestly, about how they actually got where they are.

The audience we had in mind was narrow: college and university students enrolled in horticulture programs, trying to figure out what a degree like theirs could actually turn into. Landscape design? Greenhouse production? Plant breeding? Turf management? The options are wider than most students realize, and we wanted to shrink the distance between "I'm studying this" and "I could actually do that."

Two years and more than a dozen sessions later, the series has become something bigger than we planned for and the people showing up to watch have taught us as much as our speakers have.

Who Actually Shows Up

We built this series for undergrads. We got a lot more than that.

Educators – from career and technical education teachers to university faculty – started tuning in, looking for material they could bring back into their own classrooms. Parents joined sessions to better understand a field their kids were curious about but that they themselves knew little about. Middle and high schoolers, some years away from having to declare a major at all, started showing up to get a head start on figuring out what's possible. And somewhat to our surprise, we started seeing viewers logging in from outside the United States, drawn in by the same universal question: what does a career in this field actually look like, day to day?

It turns out the appetite for honest career conversation doesn't respect the boundaries we'd originally drawn around our audience. A greenhouse manager describing how she fell into the industry after a completely unrelated first career is just as useful to a 15-year-old weighing elective classes as it is to a junior in a plant science program.

The Careers We've Featured

Part of what's made the series resonate is the sheer range of paths represented. Horticulture is not one job – it's dozens of different careers stitched together by a shared foundation in plant science, and we've tried to make that visible session by session.

Guests have joined us from greenhouse production, landscape architecture and design, plant breeding and genetics, turf and sports field management, and more – each one walking through their own version of the same basic story: here's where I started, here's the winding way I got here, and here's what nobody told me before I got into this field.

That variety is deliberate. A student who assumes horticulture means "working with plants" in some vague sense often has no idea that the field includes research scientists, urban planners, product developers, educators, entrepreneurs, and specialists in areas they've never heard of. Every new guest chips away at that narrow assumption a little more.

Why the Format Works

There's a reason a story lands harder than a statistic. A student can read a labor-market report about horticulture job growth and nod along, unmoved. But watching someone who looks like they could be a classmate – or a parent, or a mentor – describe the exact moment they realized this was the field for them tends to stick.

That's the theory behind Growing Careers: hearing directly from someone further down a path can help a student find their own path sooner, rather than spending years figuring it out through trial and error, or worse, ruling out a field entirely because they never saw themselves represented in it.

The webinars are intentionally conversational rather than scripted. Guests are asked to talk about detours, uncertainty, and the parts of their job that never make it onto a LinkedIn headline – because that's the version of the story that actually helps someone standing at their own crossroads.

The Numbers So Far

Since the series began, the recorded sessions have drawn more than 2,300 registrations and 300 recording views, a number that continues to climb well after each live session ends. That's the quiet power of recording these conversations rather than treating them as one-time events: a webinar recorded in 2024 can still be the exact video a student needs to find in 2026, whether they're a sophomore trying to pick a concentration or a high schooler filling out a college application.

What's Next

We're not slowing down. More Growing Careers webinars are already in the works for the coming semester, with new guests, new career paths, and new perspectives lined up. Keep an eye on our channels for upcoming dates and speaker announcements.

Because somewhere out there is a student who hasn't yet realized that the career they're looking for already exists – they just haven't heard someone talk about it yet.
