Growing Into My Future: The Power of Exploration Tools
Looking back on my decision to pursue horticulture, I realize that having access to comprehensive career resources was essential in shaping both my academic choices and professional goals. During my junior year of high school, when I was trying to decide what I wanted to study and where to go to college, I stumbled across the profession of horticulture. At the time, I had never even heard the word before, but almost immediately, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I grew up loving the outdoors and spending time gardening with my dad, so the idea of working with plants felt familiar and exciting. What I did not realize then was just how large and diverse the horticulture industry truly is. While that variety was inspiring, it was also overwhelming, and I was unsure how to narrow down a clear path.
That is when I discovered Seed Your Future. Through their career exploration resources, I began to understand the full scope of opportunities within horticulture. One day, I clicked through the tool to explore careers aligned with creativity and sustainability. Within just two clicks, I found landscape design, a field that instantly resonated with my interests. Using their career exploration tool, which highlights more than 120 different careers, I realized there truly is a place for everyone in this industry. Horticulture is not just about growing plants. It includes roles ranging from AI developers and microbiologists to artists, plant breeders, marketers, and designers. Seeing that range made the industry feel more accessible and exciting, and it reassured me that my interests and skills could fit into it in meaningful ways.
Seed Your Future’s career exploration tool gave me clarity, confidence, and direction at a moment when I felt unsure about my next steps. It did not just show job titles; it helped me understand what those careers actually look like day to day, what education paths were available, and how my own interests and strengths could translate into a career in horticulture. Through this resource, I discovered landscape design, a job that perfectly combines my passion for plants, creativity, and sustainability. Having that clarity allowed me to move forward with confidence rather than uncertainty.
From there, I used Seed Your Future’s where-to-study resources to find programs that aligned with my goals, which led me to the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. Throughout college, I continued using Seed Your Future’s internship and career resources to explore companies and roles within the industry. Through these tools, I found Ball Horticultural Company, where I completed a summer internship that strengthened my passion for horticulture and provided valuable hands-on experience. Now, as a recent graduate, I still rely on Seed Your Future’s job board to explore positions that align with my skills and long-term goals.
Figuring out what to major in or what career path to pursue can be complicated and overwhelming. Without Seed Your Future's resources, I would have felt lost while making such a big decision. Their tools helped break a significant life choice into clear, manageable steps by putting everything I needed in one place.
