Audree’Auna Morris-Garrett understands the benefits that come with a lifelong devotion to plants. Through her volunteering at Georgia Roots Urban Farms (an urban farm focused on growing and providing quality produce to the local food systems) to her extensive career growing plants with a focus on food, she has shown a commitment to furthering her education to share her plant-passion. This is precisely why we’re highlighting her work as our latest Horticulture Hero!
Her green thumb is clearly passed down to her! When asked who inspired her to work with plants she replied: “This question has 2 answers. My mother because growing up she always had so many plants in the house. It made plant life a part of my everyday life. Secondly my son because his battle with cancer awakened me to a whole other side of plants and how they help us live and thrive here on earth...We adopted a heavily plant based regime that supported his body through chemotherapy and radiation. Along with this we started to visit local farmers markets and eat from local gardens. During that time we spent a lot of time outside at parks and on nature walks literally hugging trees because it was so therapeutic and gifted us peace in such chaos.”
When asked what advice she’d give to those interested in pursuing their plant passion, Audree spoke from experience. “I would tell them to find ways to get involved and get their hands dirty as soon as possible. A hands on experience is the best way to find out if you truly want to work in horticulture. I would also tell them to visit their local botanical garden and talk to a horticulturist or two. There are many avenues that one could take in the horticulture industry so hearing from those in the field would provide good insight.” Audree practices what she preaches, through her education and work history!
After attending Albany State University, Audree got her hands dirty working for university farms, schools, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden, always with an eye towards educating the next generation on the benefits of healthy, grown food. Most recently, her return to education (a B.S. in Agriculture Plant Science from Fort Valley State University) has allowed her to advance at the Atlanta Botanical Garden where she now works as a Horticulture Project Specialist.
Now at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, she’s able to put her knowledge to good use while working collaboratively across departments. “A typical day for me is walking into the garden. Checking in with my team to see if there are any projects that I could help with. My days are never the same. Some days I work on major planting projects and some days I am working with nurseries to get seasonal plants to the garden. I also work on different projects like our horticulture plastic recycling project or coordinating team trainings and meetings.” Working with the entire horticulture team, she primarily works with their VP of Horticulture, Amanda Bennett, and outdoor horticulture managers, Jim Smith and Michael Del Valle. She inspires the next generation by scheduling field trips to farms and gardens, planning horticulture based projects for students, and attending career fairs at schools to present on horticulture careers.
Not only does Audree’s passion for plants shine through her work, her focus on healthy food access rings through as well. Her studies and work reinforce her belief that horticulture is important and carries through her work. “Horticulture is important for the world in many ways. Horticulture enables food security, economic development, biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and overall human well-being. It plays a multifaceted role in addressing global challenges such as food shortages, poverty, and environmental degradation.”
Audree is so easily able to inspire the next generation because she herself is continuously inspired by the joys of plants. “I find horticulture inspiring because it is a beautiful marriage of science and art. There are plants that nourish the body through food and also plants that nourish the soul through beauty and smell. Plants are benefiting us in so many ways and I love contributing to that. The possibilities seem endless and everyday there is something growing.” We hope your love of plants continues to grow just as it has for Audree’Auna Morris-Garrett, our latest Horticulture Hero!
