CELEBRATING 2025
From industry...
As I begin my term as Board President of Seed Your Future, I am both honored and energized to continue my strong support of this organization over the next three years. Seed Your Future stands at a pivotal moment – where industry need, student curiosity, and opportunity intersect – and I am excited to help lead us forward.
The horticulture industry depends on a skilled, passionate, and prepared workforce, yet too many career pathways remain invisible to students. Seed Your Future is changing that by connecting young people to the breadth and depth of opportunities across our industry and by equipping educators with the tools to bring those careers to life in the classroom.
My vision for Seed Your Future is centered on stronger, more visible industry participation across all segments of horticulture. When growers, breeders, retailers, technology providers, landscape professionals, floriculture leaders, and allied businesses actively engage with students, we do more than fill jobs – we build understanding, inspiration, and long-term commitment to our field. Industry involvement is not optional; it is essential to shaping the future workforce.

Equally important is our continued focus on meaningful student impact. Through immersive experiences, career exploration events, and educator partnerships, Seed Your Future is helping students see themselves in horticulture careers – often for the first time. These connections are creating real pathways and measurable outcomes for both students and employers.
I am proud to serve alongside a dedicated Board and to support the leadership of Executive Director Jazmin Albarran and the Seed Your Future team. Together with our industry partners, we are building momentum, strengthening collaboration, and advancing a shared vision for a vibrant, resilient horticulture industry.
Thank you for your continued investment in Seed Your Future and in the next generation of horticulture leaders.

...to Students
For many students, choosing a career path can feel like navigating unfamiliar territory. Ella's story is a testament to what becomes possible when the right resources appear at the right moment. Like thousands of students who turn to the Seed Your Future website each year, Ella arrived without a roadmap. Read her story, in her words, below.

During my junior year of high school, I stumbled across the profession of horticulture. At the time, I had never even heard the word before, but immediately, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I grew up loving the outdoors and spending time gardening with my dad, so the idea of working with plants was familiar and exciting.
Through Seed Your Future career exploration resources, I began to understand the full scope of opportunities within horticulture. I found landscape design, a field that instantly resonated with my interests. I realized there truly is a place for everyone in this industry. Horticulture is not just about growing plants. Seeing that range made the industry feel more accessible and exciting, and it reassured me that my interests and skills could fit into it in meaningful ways.
Seed Your Future's career exploration tool gave me clarity, confidence, and direction at a moment when I felt unsure about my next steps. Through this resource, I discovered landscape design, a job that perfectly combines my passion for plants, creativity, and sustainability.
From there, I used Seed Your Future's where-to-study resources to find programs that aligned with my goals, which led me to the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. I continued using Seed Your Future's internship and career resources to explore companies and roles within the industry. Through these tools, I found Ball Horticultural Company, where I completed a summer internship and provided valuable hands-on experience. Now, as a recent graduate, I still rely on Seed Your Future's job board to explore positions that align with my skills and long-term goals.
Figuring out what to major in or what career path to pursue can be complicated and overwhelming. I am incredibly grateful for the role it played in helping me discover a future in horticulture.

Horticulture is everywhere. It’s in the food on your table, the green spaces where you unwind, the landscapes that shape your city, and the flowers that mark life’s most meaningful moments. Yet the industry faces a quiet crisis: not enough people knew it was a career path worth pursuing.
That’s exactly why Seed Your Future exists.
Founded in 2014 by a coalition of horticulture professionals and educators who refused to let their industry go unnoticed, Seed Your Future (SYF) was built on a simple but powerful belief – that when young people discover horticulture, they don’t just find a job. They find a calling.
One Industry, Endless Possibility
Horticulture is one of the most diverse and dynamic industries in the world, spanning landscape design, plant science, floral arts, urban agriculture, sustainability, and beyond. Yet it remains one of the best-kept secrets in career exploration. SYF is changing that – one student at a time.
As the only organization in the country solely dedicated to growing the horticulture workforce, SYF brings together businesses, universities, and nonprofits in a shared mission: make horticulture impossible to overlook. Through career exploration tools, immersive educator experiences, internship resources, job boards, and industry connections, SYF meets students wherever they are and shows them what’s possible.
A Decade of Impact – and Counting!
The numbers tell a compelling story. SYF reached more than 20,000 students through Green Career Week, drew over 1,400 webinar registrations from students, parents, educators, and career changers eager to hear directly from panels of industry professionals, and received more than 300 educator applications for just 30 spots in the 2025 Seed to STEM cohort – a demand that speaks volumes about how hungry educators are to bring horticulture into their classrooms.
In 2025, that momentum only grew. More students than ever are discovering careers they never knew existed. More educators are bringing plant science and green careers into their curriculum. And more industry partners are stepping up to meet the next generation of horticulture professionals.
The Future is Growing
The horticulture industry needs talent – creative thinkers, problem solvers, designers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. SYF is building the pipeline to find them. By igniting curiosity in students who have never heard the word “horticulture” and guiding them all the way to the workforce, SYF isn’t just filling jobs. It’s shaping the future of an industry that the world depends on. The seeds have been planted. And the growth is just beginning.
Seed to STEM Lessons Reach Classrooms Across the Country in 2025
Seed to STEM participants develop lessons that are helping teachers bring plant science to life in classrooms nationwide. The 2024 curriculum bridges core science subjects with real horticulture careers, equipping educators with the tools to expand career conversations about an industry that is vital to human life – from the oxygen we breathe to the spaces where we live and heal. In 2025 alone, educators downloaded these lessons 1,990 times, with teachers representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Building on that momentum, the 2025 cohort expanded the program's reach in a bold new direction – welcoming art, math, business, and English teachers into the fold for the first time. Because horticulture isn't just a science story. It's an industry – one that runs on entrepreneurs, accountants, communicators, and creatives just as much as it runs on growers. Every subject area has a role to play in preparing the next generation of horticulture professionals, and every classroom is a potential on-ramp to a career. SYF is giving educators across all disciplines the tools to make that connection and students the chance to see themselves in an industry that shapes the world around them.

2025 Seed to STEM Participant Testimonials

As the horticulture industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: meaningful internships are one of the most powerful ways to build the next generation of skilled, inspired, and prepared professionals. Seed Your Future with the NC State Horticulture Department – conducted a national internship study to better understand what students, employers, and universities need to make internships more effective across the green industry.
The results point to one undeniable truth: when internships are done well, everyone benefits. As the horticulture industry faces ongoing workforce shortages, internships play a critical role in helping students discover, prepare for, and enter green careers. Seed Your Future launched a national internships research initiative to better understand how experiential learning can strengthen the talent pipeline and remove barriers for both students and employers.
What We Learned:
- Paid internships significantly increase student participation and retention.
- Students value mentorship and real-world skill development as much as compensation.
- Employers cite time, staffing, and program structure as top barriers to hosting interns.
- Awareness of horticulture internships remains a major access gap.
Based on these findings, Seed Your Future will develop a suite of employer, student and departmental resources; including internship guides, planning worksheets, internship assessment forms and professional development webinars. These tools help organizations create more effective, equitable, and engaging internship programs – directly strengthening the industry’s workforce pipeline.
One of the strongest findings from the study is that internships dramatically boost a student’s confidence in choosing horticulture as a career. For some, the experience had a lasting impact well beyond graduation. One alumnus reflected on how transformative their internship was, saying:
“It changed the trajectory of my career by introducing me to public horticulture. I fell in love with the aspects of horticulture that aren’t taught in the classroom – working with people and having the opportunity to embrace both the science and artistry of plants in a way that inspires people instead of just performing a task.”
Through research, resources, and industry collaboration, Seed Your Future is ensuring that internships become a powerful gateway into horticulture careers for the next generation.
