LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

As I reflect on the progress of Seed Your Future over the past decade, I am filled with immense pride, gratitude, and excitement for what is to come. What began as a program to ignite a passion for plants in middle school students has blossomed into a nationally recognized nonprofit with a bold, expanded mission.

Our focus now includes high school, college, and university students allowing us to take a more comprehensive approach to developing future leaders in horticulture. With this shift, we can build a robust pipeline for the next generation of professionals.

This year we’ve celebrated milestones that deeply resonate with students, educators, and industry leaders alike. The launch of the Seed to STEM program stands out as a pivotal achievement, empowering high school educators to bring horticulture into classrooms and career explorations. By connecting teachers with industry professionals and providing hands-on experiences, we are fostering curiosity about green careers and enabling more young minds to see the exciting possibilities in horticulture.

Since its launch in 2022, Green Career Week has connected students with local horticulture businesses across the country through classroom visits, field trips, and virtual experiences. These connections inspire students to explore horticulture careers while also creating future hiring opportunities and boosting enrollment in horticulture programs. By making these connections tangible and accessible, we are addressing the workforce gap and inspiring students to explore meaningful, rewarding careers in plants.

Our growth continues with the development of our 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. This plan lays out ambitious goals to expand educational opportunities, build more workforce pathways, and foster deeper connections between students and industry leaders. One exciting example is our Growing Careers Webinar Series, which brings industry professionals directly to students and educators through engaging, virtual sessions that highlight the diverse career paths in horticulture.

Your unwavering support and belief in our shared vision have made these accomplishments possible. As we prepare for the next chapter of Seed Your Future, I am energized by the possibilities ahead. Together, we will build on the strong foundation of the past decade, expand our network of industry partnerships, and create more innovative programs to cultivate curiosity and spark a love for plants. Your leadership and partnership remain critical as we continue to inspire and empower the next generation, ensuring a sustainable and thriving horticulture industry for years to come.

Seed Your Future (SYF) was founded with a clear mission: to inspire and connect young people with careers in horticulture—a field often overlooked despite its vital role in our daily lives. In 2014, a passionate group of horticulture professionals and professors united over a shared vision to bridge the gap between students and the vast opportunities in plant-related careers.

“Seed Your Future is the only organization I know of focused solely on expanding the number of professionals in the horticulture industry,” said Ronda Hamm, president of the SYF board of directors, “Its ability to connect students, educators, and industry professionals is crucial in addressing the workforce needs within this industry.”

With a bold and creative approach, SYF has engaged students through dynamic campaigns, immersive experiences for educators, and wide-spread connections between students and industry professionals. These programs have made a significant impact, connecting with more than 15,000 students through Green Career Week, and reaching more than 600,000 educators and 4 million students through initiatives like BLOOM!

SYF is set apart by its dedicated focus on horticulture careers. By fostering collaborations with businesses, universities, and nonprofits, SYF is leading the movement: clearing pathways for students while addressing the growing workforce needs within the industry, ensuring a bright future for horticulture.

THE MOVEMENT: EDUCATORS

Empowering educators, opening the door for students to explore horticulture.

Teachers are catalysts for student success, but their ability to inspire is often limited by their own experiences. Recognizing this, Seed Your Future launched a groundbreaking program in 2024 to bridge this gap: Seed to STEM. Designed to provide educators with hands- on exposure to the horticulture industry, the program empowers teachers to guide the next generation of horticulture leaders.

Seed to STEM combines hands-on, experiential learning with collaborative lesson development tailored to the needs of educators. This inaugural program, made possible through the sponsorship of Longwood Gardens, Ball Horticulture Company, and Corteva Agriscience, took place in June 2024 in the Indianapolis area.

The program engaged a diverse cohort of 25 high school science teachers from 12 states: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Oregon. These educators participated in an immersive journey through the horticulture industry, gaining firsthand knowledge of its vast career opportunities and cutting- edge innovations. Notable highlights from the program include:

  • Exploring the artistic structure of plants in human- scapes at Newfields Art Museum and Botanical Garden.

  • Learning about drone systems and seed innovation at Purdue’s Corn and Soybean Innovation Center, where educators engaged with experts on agricultural advancements.

  • Learning about cold-chain logistics and creating floral centerpieces at Kennicott Brothers Company, one of the largest cut flower distributors in the country, while touring their Indianapolis warehouse.

  • Collaborating with PhD scientists at Corteva Agriscience’s teaching labs, experiencing the process of investigating pest management horticultural development.

  • Touring Heartland Growers, a commercial greenhouse, to see how thousands of plants are grown on precise schedules and tailored prescriptions through multiple growing cycles.

Beyond the in-person experiences, Seed to STEM included three webinars to kick off the program, introduce the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and guide educators in refining their lesson plans. With mentorship from Vivayic’s learning design team, the educators developed 25 lesson plans on topics such as “Navigating Climate Ecosystems,” “The Impact of Light on Plants,” and “The Journey of Biofuels.” Each lesson aligns with NGSS and is freely available for download.

The success of this inaugural program has set the stage for future growth. Seed Your Future is already planning the next phase of Seed to STEM, with ambitions to expand the program to include English, art, and math teachers. By equipping educators with knowledge about horticulture as a global employer, Seed Your Future ensures that more students are introduced to meaningful career pathways in horticulture. In June 2025, the program hopes to welcome 30 participants to its next session in the Chicago area.

Green Career Week is a national initiative designed by Seed Your Future to unite industry leaders and educators in showcasing career opportunities and building relationships with students. Each spring and fall since October 2022, during this dedicated week, businesses and organizations connect with local schools, colleges, and universities to highlight the wide variety of career paths available in horticulture.

Whitney Hale, Education Coordinator at the University of Tennessee Gardens, has seen firsthand how transformative Green Career Week can be.

“Through Green Career Week, we are now more equipped to share information about green careers with students of all ages,” Hale said. “This lens has enriched our programming throughout the year. We now try to incorp-orate green career touchpoints in nearly every youth program.”

The SYF toolkit and webinars make it easy for organizations to share their stories and inspire students. Hale said SYFs resources helped her team launch creative projects like career-focused videos, giving both students and staff valuable new skills. With ready-made lesson plans, hands-on activities, and expert insights, these resources take the guesswork out of connecting with the next generation and equip professionals to make a lasting impact.

At Bailey Nurseries, the program has inspired employees to stretch their potential. Justin Goodroad, Learning Development & Internal Communication Coordinator, said, “Green Career Week has allowed several of our staff to flex into areas outside of their normal positions and develop new skills, strengthening their engagement with Bailey and the industry.”

The future of the green industry depends on professionals stepping forward to share their knowledge and passion. With Green Career Week, making that connection is simple, and the impact is immeasurable.

THE MOVEMENT: STUDENTS

Inspiring tomorrow’s leaders to pursue careers with plants.

SYF is bridging the gap between curiosity and careers in the green industry. The robust suite of SYF resources—career profiles, a scholarship and internship database, and an interactive study map of horticulture programs—offers students practical tools to envision and pursue meaningful futures.

Alexandra Cantwell, director of adult education at Norfolk Botanical Garden, saw firsthand how SYF’s materials transformed her environmental studies internship program. Cantwell incorporated SYF’s Bloom! campaign “Plant Power” quiz into the internship program, which she praised as both fun and insightful for driving meaningful conversations. The Bloom Green Industry PDF proved invaluable at career fairs, attracting attention and igniting interest in green careers, Cantwell said.

“The wide range of content SYF offers made it an easy and natural choice to integrate into a variety of programs. ”

– Alexandra Cantwell, director of adult education at Norfolk Botanical Garden

The impact is undeniable. By the end of one internship season, three of six participating high school seniors changed their majors to horticulture, inspired by activities like habitat creation and invasive plant removal. One student took their

passion further, pursuing an internship at Norfolk Botanical Garden and enrolling in Virginia Tech’s environmental horticulture program. Their enthusiasm even inspired a younger sibling to establish a pollinator garden as part of a Girl Scout project.

“I didn’t even know horticulture was a thing, and now I want to pursue a career in horticulture. This (program) helped me realize how integral plants are and that environmental science is about more than just the mega fauna we all know and love. ”

– Cole R., Student

SYF isn’t just shaping career paths; it’s fostering a lifelong appreciation for horticulture’s role in art, science, business, and technology. “Each year, I’m reminded of how excited students are about the vast opportunities within the field that they previously were unfamiliar with,” Cantwell said. “The structure that Seed Your Future uses is incredibly user friendly and digestible.”

Supporting SYF means investing in a movement that transforms lives and ensures a thriving future for the horticulture industry. Together, we can empower more students to discover their potential and grow a passion for horticulture.
